How it all began …

It was just after the pressure group Fathers For Justice staged one of their publicity stunts – I forget which one – that I got thinking about dads and sons. Not that I’m either, but I was struck by how fierce a father’s love can be for a child. And the lengths to which they go to keep them … And I’m thinking …what if … what if a loving father turned out NOT to be the sort of father a teenager would like to have.

And so Close-up was born.

Sort of.

Close-Up
of me.

Close-Up.

Because the most important thing about any novel is the characters, and so my mind went into overdrive and the result was – Jimmy and Liz.

Jimmy’s mad about the movies, so much so that his real life passes him by in a dream. He’s a bit of a laugh – but is there any more to him? And Liz is his total opposite- hard-headed, full of common sense, feet on the ground – and fighting her feelings for Jimmy. A nicely explosive mix.

And then I gave Liz and Jimmy parent problems. Liz’s Mum wants her boyfriend to move in with them, and as for Jimmy …

His real dad turns up out of the blue – and he didn’t even know he existed!

His dad showers him with money, affection and the key to a luxury flat. Only there’s more to dad than meets the eye … Or the camera ….

Close-up’s about what happens when fantasy meets reality – oh, and how to make a good cup of coffee.

Jimmy and Liz work together part-time in Coffee Corp, along with their mates Amir, Charlene and others. Coffee Corp is a typical city-centre coffee shop, cool, jazzy and multi-cultural.

But multi-cultural is not exactly what Jimmy’s dad is about.

If I say any more I’ll give away the novel, so get reading!

Oh, and the coffee scenes are totally authentic – I spent an afternoon behind the counter at my local Starbucks, learning how to froth up a latte and toast paninis. So if I ever fall on hard times, I’ll know where to get employment.

Only joking – I’m enjoying my writing more than ever, and I hope you enjoy Close-up!!

Can you work out which scene took place there?
